Cisco:
In early-September 2008, we got a call from Crossroads Animal Hospital (who had taken care of and fallen in love with McClain). A 5-month old pup had been hit by a truck and a witness brought the dog to them. They said the dog was worth saving because, like McClain, despite the pain he was giving them all kisses. They had called other rescues but everyone said no because (gasp) it was a pit bull pup! We were their last resort and, even though we are a small group with limited funding, they wanted to know if we would stand up for the pup. We thought it most fitting that the first -- but by no means the last -- receipient of McClain's Fund had a story so similar to our beloved pup who taught us all so much about facing adversity and living life to the fullest.

Leroy Brown:
Leroy Brown, the 2nd McClain's Emergency Fund recipient, came to us in April 2009, after we were contacted by a veterinarian regarding a dog hit by a car who, like McClain, refused to die. How could we say no? Leroy had suffered a fractured pelvis and leg, and had injuries to his front leg ... simply put, he only had one working leg, but what a lover of a dog! He has taught us we can face anything with a smile and a tail wag! All it takes is a little love and help from your friends.

Little Ricky
This is my story -- I do need to start by saying I am the reason small dog puppies and children should never be left alone together -- EVER!
In August 2009, From the Heart was called by the shelter to see if they could help a 4-month old, chihuahua pup with 2 broken elbows. The woman turning him in had said he was a stray -- but come on, how many dogs can run loose with 2 broken arms! A little investigation showed the woman who turned me in had taken me to 2 doctors and when she found out how much it was going to cost to fix my elbows, she turned me into the pound. The story she told the docs was that her 5-year son had broken the pups elbows giving him a bath and trying to put a t-shirt on him. From the Heart took me in and had 2 surgeries performed. Ricky's bones were so small that the doctor to wire them because the screws were too big.

We wanted to share the joy with you of Little Ricky running … yes, running!!! His foster dad took this video just before Little Ricky went off to his new home.
Thanks to McClain's Army of Angels who helped fund the memorial emergency fund -- we were able to say "yes" to these deserving dogs. Our volunteers are committed to keeping the fund alive in honor of McClain who taught us all so much about life. Won't you join us in that goal?
